Stone's Building Center is one of the oldest businesses in Marathon
County. It's history stretches back over a century to February of 1893, when Jacob
Mortenson & Fowler P. Stone purchased a sawmill and planing mill on the West bank of
the Wisconsin River, just North of Bridge Street.
By the turn of the century, the operation was the largest lumbering firm in Marathon
County and was providing over 35 million board feet of lumber annually.
In 1926, the sawmill was closed and the company became exclusively a retailer, to
accommodate the changing needs of customers that have passed through the firm's doors over
a time span that began during the horse and buggy era.
Then, in 1986, Bridge Street was widened and the company decided to replace the old
building with a brand new one. The new store came complete with the same great service and
an even bigger selection of building related products.
The corporate name was changed from Mortenson & Stone Lumber to Stone's Building
Center at the time of the move into the new building.
The store also features a drive-through warehouse with store access for easy loading
and improved customer convenience.
